Enchanting winter experiences around the Judenstein Campground

The Advent and Christmas season in Tyrol is full of special moments. Around Camping Judenstein, you can experience atmospheric events, living traditions and festive highlights for the whole family – from Advent right through to New Year’s Eve.

A particular highlight for children is the Christ Child Procession in Innsbruck. More than 400 children dressed as shepherds and angels accompany the Christ Child, together with sheep, through the city centre in a beautifully decorated carriage – a magical experience that truly brings the anticipation of Christmas to life.

In Hall in Tirol, the Advent season is also celebrated with plenty of tradition. A visit from St. Nicholas at the Advent market is especially exciting for little guests, bringing a touch of authentic Tyrolean Christmas tradition to the festively decorated historic town centre.

As the year draws to a close, Innsbruck gets ready for Bergsilvester – its spectacular New Year’s Eve celebrations. The city centre comes alive with music, winter atmosphere and a variety of events, all set against the impressive backdrop of the Tyrolean Alps.

World-famous winter sporting events not far from the Judenstein Campground

Winter in Tyrol is about much more than skiing. Around Camping Judenstein, you can experience some of Austria’s biggest sporting events – and two of them take place practically on our doorstep.

At the Four Hills Tournament’s New Year’s Ski Jumping on the Bergisel in Innsbruck, you can experience the unique atmosphere of this world-famous event up close. The World Championship Ice Track in Igls is also just a few kilometres from the campsite and will be the venue for international winter sports competitions in 2027: the FIL World Championships in Luge on the artificial track and the FIL World Championships in Natural Track Luge.

If you want to experience the excitement of top-level alpine skiing, don’t miss the legendary Hahnenkamm Race in Kitzbühel. The Streif and the race are among the most famous highlights in alpine skiing and can also be reached easily from Judenstein by public transport.

Krampus – Traditions Around St. Nicholas Day

When heavy bells echo through the villages in December and frightening figures wearing intricately carved masks take to the streets, Krampus season has arrived in Tyrol. The Krampus traditionally accompanies St. Nicholas and is one of the best-known traditions of the Advent season. Krampus runs and St. Nicholas processions keep this centuries-old tradition alive to this day.

There are also plenty of opportunities to experience this special tradition around Camping Judenstein. Innsbruck and Igls are both very close by. In Igls, a traditional St. Nicholas procession is followed by a Krampus run. During the Advent season, you can also see Krampus and Perchten at various events in Seefeld and Innsbruck.

Another fascinating experience is the Perchten run and witches’ dance in Rattenberg.

Fasnacht – Muller & Matschgerer

After the peaceful Advent and Christmas season, Tyrol becomes lively, colourful and exuberant once again: Fasnacht, the traditional carnival season, is just around the corner. This ancient tradition is celebrated with great enthusiasm, particularly in the region around Hall in Tirol and the MARTA villages (Mühlau, Arzl, Rum, Thaur and Absam).

The Muller and Matschgerer play a special role in these celebrations. During Fasnacht, they make their way through the villages wearing elaborately designed costumes, intricately carved wooden masks and large bells, accompanied by traditional dances. The different figures represent ancient customs and symbolise, among other things, the transition from winter to spring. Through their lively celebrations, winter is bid farewell and spring is welcomed.
