Are snow chains required for my trip? Do we need winter tires?
Are snow chains required for my trip? Do we need winter tires?
As a general rule, the legal requirement to use winter tires applies throughout Austria from November 1 through April 15, depending on road conditions. This means that when road conditions are wintery (snow, slush, or ice), you may only drive on those roads with winter tires.
Short-Term Snow Chain Requirement During Extreme Weather
In the event of very heavy, sudden snowfall or extreme winter road conditions, authorities often impose a short-term snow chain requirement on higher-elevation road sections! This is indicated directly on the road by a round, blue traffic sign featuring the snow chain symbol. As soon as this sign is in effect, all vehicles must have chains installed on their drive wheels. All-wheel-drive vehicles are usually exempt from this regulation.
There are such higher-elevation road sections along the route to the Judenstein Campground. Therefore, check the current local weather conditions shortly before your arrival, or always carry snow chains with you.
For vehicles weighing more than 3.5 metric tons, it is generally mandatory to carry snow chains for at least two drive wheels.
